2012 FOOD SCIENCE STUDENT SURVEY

Hello Food Scientists!

We just completed our bi-annual Student Survey, calculating the total number of students in the 37 IFT approved Food Science programs in U.S. based universities. In 2006, we saw the need for this information as we realized that there was no other valid information available. Due to many requests from both academia and industry, we have continued publishing our survey.

We posed three questions to the Food Science Chairs; how many undergraduate students are currently in the program, how many will graduate in 2012, and how many will continue on to graduate school. The good news is that the numbers have increased dramatically since we started this survey. As an example, in 2006, only 4 programs had over 100 students. In 2012, there were 18 programs with over 100 students, and some have over 200. The number of graduating seniors has increased from 473 to 751, a 59% increase, (and we were polling 5 less programs this year, as some were no longer IFT approved.) The total number of students in undergraduate programs today is  3547. It’s still not enough, but is a great improvement.

We thank all of the universities who participated in this survey. Thanks again everyone for your quick responses.
